About Devi

ಶ್ರೀ ದೇವಿ ಮಹಾತ್ಮೆ

Sri Devi Mahatme

The growth and history of the sacred temple of Shri Mukhya Pran Devar Saheeth Shri Yakshi Chandika Durga Parameshwari, as told by the temple.

O Divine Mother, be gracious.

O compassionate protector of devotees, be pleased.

O Goddess, bestow your blessings upon me.

O Durga Devi, my humble salutations to You.

Chapter I

A Tantric priest from Kerala

Several decades ago, a Tantric priest from Kerala was devotedly worshipping the Goddess. During his spiritual journey he stayed for some time at the sacred shrine of Kollur Mookambika, continuing his worship. Later he travelled north and settled in Dharwad, where he continued serving the Goddess.

The area was then dense with trees and wilderness, and through the power of his worship the region began to prosper. But some locals, unable to tolerate his activities, falsely accused him of black magic and tragically killed him. Unable to attain liberation, the Brahmin Tantric became a Brahmarakshasa.

Chapter II

The Goddess upon the sacred wall

The land was later purchased by Tulasabai Rattihalli from Minajigi for a residence. Her son, Hanumanth Rao, served in the Khanapur Police Department, and his son, Sri Abhilash, was deeply spiritual from a very young age. Their family deity was Saundatti Yellamma.

Though only a young child, Abhilash began worship as his grandmother instructed. Gradually, miraculous events began to occur: ghee, oil and tender coconut water began to ooze from the wall. At night the sound of anklets could be heard, and the fragrance of incense, jasmine and champaka flowers filled the air.

“Renuka Devi is our family deity. She resides with us, in our home, upon the sacred wall. You must serve her.”

Chapter III

Taught in dreams

The Goddess began appearing in his dreams, instructing him to perform worship. With no formal initiation or knowledge of rituals, he began serving the Divine Mother as she guided him, night after night, through the sacred procedures. Over time, his words began to manifest as truth.

Sri Satyatma Teertha of Uttaradi Math later conducted his Upanayana. Thereafter, the Vedas and Shastras began to reveal themselves to him, and he started reciting the Durga Saptashati. One night the Goddess told him in a dream to bring the Saptashati and guided him to recite the Narayani Stuti. From that moment, Vedic mantras and scriptures flowed effortlessly through him, and the worship of Durga Parameshwari began in full accordance with scriptural tradition.

Chapter IV

Sent back to serve

During his pre-university years his younger brother passed away unexpectedly. On the day of the final rites, Abhilash developed a severe fever and was hospitalised. Doctors diagnosed dengue and held out little hope. Semi-conscious, he was given a substance by an unknown person, slipped into a coma, and by evening was declared dead.

Yet he experienced leaving his body, saw his family grieving, and journeyed in a form of light toward higher realms, where the Goddess summoned him. With her command he returned to his body, which regained warmth and life, and doctors confirmed his recovery. Though the experience lasted three days for him, only a few hours had passed in the physical world.

“Why have you come so soon? You still have much work to accomplish for the welfare of the world. Return.”

Chapter V

The temple is established

Inspired by the Goddess, plans were made to build the temple. An Ashtamangala Prashna was conducted by the renowned Tantric Sri Satyanarayana Bhat from Kerala. It revealed the presence of a Brahmarakshasa at the site and identified the Goddess as a 33-year-old divine manifestation.

Through proper rituals the spirit was liberated, and the Goddess was established in accordance with sacred tradition. She is of a Rajasic nature, balanced between calmness and fierceness, blessing devotees with virtue while destroying negativity. Hence she is revered as Chandika Durgaparameshwari.

Chapter VI

Nagayakshi and the Asta Kula Navanag

The Goddess declared that she would grant darshan through Sri Abhilash Guruji himself, and to this day devotees receive divine guidance through him. She personally directs the rituals, adornments and offerings.

Later, Nagayakshi also manifested and was established along with the Asta Kula Navanag. Sacred Saligrama forms were also discovered at the temple.

Chapter VII

Worship today

Regular poojas are conducted on Tuesdays, Fridays, full moon and new moon days. During the aarti the Goddess manifests through Guruji and guides devotees, helping resolve their difficulties.

On every full moon, Satyanarayana Pooja is performed, especially beneficial for those seeking children, and many naming ceremonies have been conducted here. On Sankashti Chaturthi, Gana Homa is performed for peace, education and the removal of obstacles. Devotees perform Kaayi Deepa Seva, offering lamps in coconuts. Chandi Homa, Parayana, Vidyarambha, Annaprashana and Shatru Samhara Pooja are conducted, and an annual grand festival is celebrated with Navachandi Homa.
